Blog Birthday!

Hello Everyone!

It’s my blog birthday post! One day late.

So what do I do for a blog birthday? I had wanted to design and do a wood craft of some sort, but the week got away from me. So I thought of doing a 1 year recap. First

I started out this blog with the intentions of showing my wood crafts that I was doing mainly using a scroll saw. But I guess, as with all blogs, it evolved to include thoughts and ideas and just a what is going on with life, happenings. Pages were added as ideas came along. That included my Thankfulness page, with monthly dividers and daily additions, hopefully keeping it somewhat neat, easy to read and followable. Thankfulness

I started this out with a couple questions/contest to maybe jump start interest. That seemed to fail. So I will answer them here.

One was what is this tulip used for?

It is a plastic bag holder for drying them.

My Dad made these, so I made some too. After washing out a sandwich bag slip it over the flower to dry and reuse. Don’t just throw them away! Tulip

How is the coloring done on these?

Dipped in a bowl with a food coloring and water mixture.

You could also do this with a brush to mix colors on the wood. Then you need to seal it as the colors do bleed if it gets wet. #1 and Numbers

I did what I call Desktop names. Desktops

I still have these. Know anyone who wants them? HINT! HINT!

I gave a lot of these away as gifts to family and friends, sold a couple.

During the football season I did football jerseys.

These were good sellers!

Once I moved my work space inside during the winter I got slack and started messing up with the spray paint or spray lacquer. You gotta follow the directions! Stay far enough away from what you are spraying. Don’t get too close.

Here's what happens if you get too close!

See all those bumps? This wasn’t even the worst one. The spray goes on looking good, then in a matter of minutes it can get all alligator skin-like. Oops, and It was me

Christmas was coming so I started with the Christmas theme. Hey it’s coming again soon!

I did reindeer.

A snow flake

A lot of name and word ornaments!

Those were good sellers too.

Our dining room and table got turned into a painting station! Busy

Here's a shot of the dining room table.

You can see the reindeer, some ornaments and some desktop names. I was also getting ready for a Christmas craft fair. Hey that’s coming up soon too!

Here's last years display.

I did a late birthday gift for a brother.

For his golf bag.

Here is what was probably the hardest piece I did. Yet it was fun to do too.

A Heart shelf

That turned out really nice. I even impressed myself! Heart

Here is a future project that I took a picture of. I still need to size it and then print it.

An owl trivet.

Along with many others of course!

I did a blog series on how I do it. It, was a desktop name and when I finished it, packaged it and sent it via the Post Office that’s the last it was seen or heard from! It disappeared in the postal maze and I lost the shipping receipt. I will do another one. Series start

I posted about Wheaton Academy football last year and this year. By the way our last game was last night. Lost again to finish the season 1 – 8. Most of the teams we lost to either made the playoffs or had a good chance to. A lot of tough teams. Josh has another week and a half in his second cast. Then maybe some therapy to get the arm back in shape. Next up the Academic Team, that’s non-contact! 🙂

I did posts on Thanksgiving, Christmas, Mothers Day, Veterans Day, Memorial Day and July 4th. I missed Easter!

I did a post to Westboro Baptist Church on March 2nd and that got the most views ever for this blog on March 3rd. Here

I did posts about my job search. That is still on going. With other miscellaneous posts thrown in here and there.

Thank you to all my readers and subscribers. Especially those who comment! I enjoy reading your comments and responding. You all have made this blog more worth while to me. You have lifted me up when I was down and been an encouragement to me. I have blog friends around the world!

If you have ideas for me to blog about just ask, or if you have a wood craft you would like me to try send me a pattern or again just ask. I will do my best.

Thank you again! I hope you enjoy this recap!

I am on LinkedIn and Facebook now too, along with MySpace. So come Link and friend me!

Craft Show Review

Hello Everyone!

Well we made it to the craft show this afternoon at the college up the street from us. We went to see what was there. We met another mom and her daughter there. So it was me, my wife, our 12 year old daughter, our friend and her 11 year old daughter. Our girls are friends too.

I was especially interested the wood crafters and what they were doing. The ladies well what can I say they had to look at most everything. We stuck together for a while. Then I broke off with the girls. The moms eventually caught up and I broke away on my own for a bit then met back up with them again.

I can’t say I was disappointed at all. There were about 10 wood crafters. Two were doing actual hand wood carving, kinda neat to watch. Most had their own thing they were doing. One did figurines with an Easter theme and hand painted them. One guy had animal puzzles. These were pretty cool! We talked for quite a bit. He did all his work on the scroll saw like me. Others did a combo of scroll saw work and also used a lathe or a band saw. One guy had some pretty rustically made toy vehicles. Another two had the corn-hole toss games and one some vases. So some pretty neat work all in all and all different. Some things I think I could do and also do better. But no one really doing what I would be thinking of doing. Does that mean I am too simplistic? I don’t know yet. I plan on doing more than what I have shown so far. Plus I am still learning and maybe holding myself back from trying some more difficult work. But I do think I can do it. I will have one for you tomorrow that was more difficult and time consuming.

The ladies bought some hair bauble stuff. We all sampled any food we could. I went for the hot/spicy stuff. I went back and got a jar of sour dill with habanero pepper pickles. Ooooh baby are they hot! Just the way I like it! Last time we got some sour dill with horseradish pickles and some plain old sour dill pickles those were good too.

I offered to let my wife have a say here too, but she has to think more. I kinda just let it flow out. Maybe another time.

Well that was the show from my point of view. We spent about two and a half hours there. Now time to pick out some songs to lead for evening church and get ready to go.

Bimmer, Beemer, BMW

BMW 6 Series Coupe (BMWUSA)

Hello everyone,

So what have I got for you today?

Could it be that from the title I have made my very own car out of wood! Or am I looking to start spelling wars for said title of such car? Or am I looking for more viewers by putting a pic up there first?

Well I don’t know if it works or not but if you guessed number three you would be close.

Those who know our family might know where I am going by the BMW part. The rest is just fluff.

Our oldest son was home on spring break this past week. He is gone again. He is part of two competitions this weekend. One today in Ohio and another on Monday back in our area in Chicago. While he was here I made his initials for a desktop for him. This is walnut wood again. Yes, his initials are BMW and here they are!

BMW

Yes, he does like the cars that have the same initials. He also likes the new Ford Mustangs.

I have about done all I can with that piece of walnut. Now the rest becomes designer firewood. Unless I can figure out a few more small things to do with what is left of it. Maybe this woodcrafter will come up with something.

Gonna try to get to a local craft show at the college up the street either today or tomorrow. Gotta see what others are doing, maybe get some ideas or see that what I would do is not being done, at least locally. Also to see what people are pricing things at.

Until the next one.

Our friend!

Hello everyone!

I hope you have had a good weekend thus far and a good day today.

Being Sunday we went to church as is our usual. Can’t really see a better place to be, this side of heaven, on a Sunday morning.

That is just about what our Pastor spoke about today. That blessed hope that we as Christians have, that our place is waiting for us at the time of our last breath on this earth or when we meet Jesus in the air! So at the death of a loved one who knows and believes as we do there is not the sorrow as others have. We WILL see them again. We are just a part for a while.

Also today I had a gift for a friend at church, who went out of her way to get us some financial help a while ago. I won’t go into the details but I just wanted to say thanks again in a little way that I can. So I made a desktop name for her. But I only saw her husband and gave it to him. He liked it and I hope she does too. You have a special lady there for a wife Craig!

So this deserves a pic and here it is.

Thanks again Pam!

You know this here world keeps getting smaller and smaller with all the connections you can make these days. Because of my association to a scroll saw forum, I have friends all over the world and this blog has added to that along with finding other blogs and making friends there too. Life can be rough some times, don’t we all know that! But it is good to make friends and have them rally around you when you need it and just cause they want to!

Maybe some day this wood crafter will make all of you something!

Until then and the saw dust settles,

Catching Up!

Hello Everyone!

I am catching up with the orders! All are cut and sanded. Most are painted. But my hand painter is baking cookies here today with her mom. My spray painting technique needs help. I don’t really know what I am doing wrong. Some times it works out great, but when it goes bad it really stinks!

I got one order in the mail and another was picked up. I tried to deliver another order but he was not at work today. So if you read this Rob G. your order is done. I will try again tomorrow. You NEED to show it off there. Or you can contact me too.

Also a neighbor asked me to do a project for them. It is cutting a wood seat for a chair. So I said yes.  She also wants a snowflake ornament. She didn’t have time to get it at the craft show.

I tried out a new contact form on yesterdays post that wordpress just put out. I lost the whole post! I don’t know if I will get it back. 😦 I can’t remember all that I said. Then I tried it on this one and lost it too! So I had to re-do it. I guess I will wait until they get the bugs worked out.

I also repaired our kitchen faucet today. Yep even in a plumbers house things go wrong with the plumbing. But I had saved parts and faucets from jobs and had the exact part out in the garage. I just had to go find it. It’s good as new! I think I get that saving parts thing from my grandfather. It has come in handy many times over the years. Lots of happy customers when you don’t have to order new parts and wait for them or have to replace the whole faucet when I have had parts in the truck or at my house. 🙂

So here are pics of the rest of Rob’s order.

Valley day

Hello everyone!

I did the plumbing job today. So we got some cashola. It was one of the hardest kitchen faucets to take out that I have had in a long time. I usually try to get them out in one piece but this one wanted no part of that idea. It came out in many pieces. The new one went in no problem. Most of them do. I also fixed a toilet. So the plumber did some plumbing. Done right and done good with another satisfied customer. That’s what I strive for.

So what’s with valley day? I’m  glad you asked! You know it gets kinda hard to keep coming up with titles for this blog. Named after what I did that day, or didn’t do. Named after the work I am doing; plumbing or wood crafting. Named after ornaments I made or what happened to them. Or about what is going on or off, like the roof.

So since I was home most of the day, we live in a valley, and the job was basically up the street from us, about a mile or so. Plus the ornaments I am going to show you pics of are area related. Sooo, Valley day became my title for today.

The ornament pics are of the names of the Sub-division we live in and the grade school in the valley where the craft show was held.

So without further delay, here they are.

Our sub-division

We are actually on the western edge of it.

The grade school

Lots of people liked these! I sold one of the school but none of the Valley View ornaments.

Have a great weekend!

Christmas word ornaments

Hello everyone!

Today has been a good day so far.

I had two plumbing jobs, so that helps.

We heard from our son, Benjamin, a senior in college. He called to tell us he had taken the GRE test today and scored a 790 out of 800! So he was pretty happy about that and so are we. We get to brag on him! Good job Benjamin! (plus you better be visiting my blog and telling your friends too!) I have some Taylor stuff in the works.

So what about this Christmas word ornament title? Well that is the next pic I am going to show of some of the work we all put in for the craft show. My wife and sister Laurel did some great work in painting them. Only one sold, but lots of ooohs and aaahhs and compliments.

Tonight we are going to be with family that came in to town. Looking forward to seeing them again.

Here is a pic of all of the word ornaments together.
